How can I use reference images?

Answer

Reference images may only be used for personal reference and research purposes. Researchers accept full responsibility for determining whether or not U.S. copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) protects the materials being copied and whether or not their use exceeds the limits of fair use.

Should you want to publish any of these images, please reach out again for high resolution images and copyright clearance. CCP owns or manages the copyright for many photographers. Our Image Services and Copyright Management Department works with educators, scholars, museums, and publishers worldwide on licensing for these works, and provides reproduction image files and services for the Center's collections.

Please visit our Services for Publishers page for information on how to request permissions and/or reproductions for publication of works from our collection. From there, you can review our Conditions for General Use, and complete the appropriate publication request form.
